At the most basic level you need to think about the wear the carpet you are buying will undergo during its lifetime.
This is known as density. Density is a measure of how thick each yarn is and how closely the tufts are spaced. The greater the density the more resistant the carpet is to crushing. If you can see the backing when you bend the carpet, it has a low density.
There are different types of carpet that suit different areas of your home in terms of the quality (density) you will need. This is based on the usage of these areas. Typically you would want Heavy Duty carpets in the hall and on the stairs. We’ve given you an example of the different areas below.
If you want the same colour across all areas and across the different carpet ratings, most ranges now offer variable quality in the same colour – and in variable width.
Price ranges from £6 per square meter to £100 per square metre – so there really is something to suit all budgets and all needs. As a general guide, the Carpet Foundation recommend that you plan for £20 per square metre including underlay and fitting but it does depend on the carpet you choose.
All reputable carpet manufacturers label the carpets with the ‘wear rating’. These will tend to reflect the following:-
Hall/Stairs: Extra Heavy
Lounge: Heavy
Bedroom/Dining Room: General
Light usage area: Light
